Hi, I’m Sam…
Who am I…?
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, which was great. I had a good childhood outside of school, with very easy going parents. We spent every chance we got at the beach, surfing. Then just about every weekend, if we weren’t at the beach or at Killarney race track, watching my dad race cars or bikes, we were at the dam, skiing, or on the dunes, riding motorbikes. So, all in all, I had tons of fun growing up! School, on the other hand, was an awful time for me. Quite frankly I wasn’t designed to sit in school all day and I really didn’t fit in. All I wanted to do from a very young age, besides the want to have kids, was live life and see the world.
Why The Blog…?
In 1994 I left school and went to college. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to actually study, so I did hairdressing and cosmetics. I qualified in 1996 but never went further with either of the two. I just couldn’t stand the thought of being stuck indoors all day. I then went on to qualify as a swimming instructor, which was and still is right up my alley.
All through school I used to sit listening to teachers go on and on about how you need to get good grades in order to get anywhere in life. My parents were always told: “If Sam learnt to concentrate in class, she would do so well”. But the reality of it all is that deep down I knew I would never need half the stuff that was being taught, I’d probably never end up using anything, “out in the real world”…In high school, I took the easy option when it came to choosing subjects, and I ended up picking Typing as one of them. I got laughed at…and look what I do today. If I’m not teaching swimming…I’m writing for a living…writing while on the go!
At 20 I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, all I knew was that time was nearing for me to start travelling. So I made sure I saved every bit of income I could, in order for me to get my first plane ticket out of Cape Town and start living my dream. I didn’t want to be stuck in the same country, I wanted to be happy, meet new people, live life and see the world…so that’s exactly what I set out to do.
I worked as a waitress at a pizza and pasta restaurant, then at a beachfront restaurant, so that I could pack up and fly out.
I set off on my first trip overseas – destination – Bali, in 2000. This is when the travel bug hit me and I realised then, that this is what I wanted to do. Just travel and work along the way.
I am one of those bloggers that did quit my jobs and sell up everything to go overseas. I ended up moving to London and travelling from there. But now I make enough money working online full time, that there is no need for me to give up anything anymore.
Fast forward to 2017 and things are rather different now. I am a proud mum of two boys, living back in Cape Town. I still work online and travel when we can in the school holidays.
I will always have a passion for travelling and I will carry on for as long as possibly can.
Where Have I Been…?
So far I’ve travelled around South Africa, then to the UK, France, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Norway, Germany, Dubai, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand. It’s always been my dream to go to the US, however, I’m yet to go…I’ve got to work on that one…;)
What’s In It For You…?
Perhaps you’ve arrived here because you’re looking for advice on a particular destination, or because you want to be able to live a life that is filled with adventure. Or maybe you need a little encouragement to travel alone. Or could it be that you’re wanting to start your own blog too?
Whatever it is…I’d like to say thank you for stopping by! Feel free to ask me any questions…
I’m hoping that I can offer you some inspiration and motivate you to travel. I want to show you that you can travel anywhere you choose to. Factors like money and work should never stop you from seeing the world. If you put your mind to it…it is possible to achieve anything you want to in life. All you need to do is put yourself out there and possibly take a few risks.
I’m here to guide you and help give you the best tips that I’ve learned over the years while travelling, and I will help you save money, while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle while you’re at it!
